Abstract

This study analyses the figure of Princess Isabel Orleans-Bragança and the education she received once she was recognised as heir to the Brazilian throne. Based on a review of historical sources and relevant documents, the article aims to examine how gender dynamics and her social status influenced her education and political projection. The results reveal that, although Isabel faced limitations imposed by her status as a woman in a male-dominated political context, her education was favoured by her privileged position within the royal family. Through an education centred on reason and religiosity, Isabel was prepared to assume a leadership role in the Brazilian monarchy. The research also highlights the role of her marriage in strengthening her figure. In conclusion, the study suggests that the construction of Isabel's image as heir was a complex process that combined influences ‘from above’ from the Crown as well as the princess's own agency. Furthermore, it shows how gender shaped her political and social development, reflecting the tensions between her aspirations and the expectations of her time.
